The Camera Culture group presents Bokodes, tiny imperceptible barcodes that can be read by a standard camera positioned up to four meters away to decode identity, and six-degree-of-freedom pose (angle and distance).
The “Bokode” seems to be the result of a laser or secondary light source. What’s creating them? Great idea, btw.

Arrays of these strategically placed on surfaces using dynamically programmable code patterns backed by neural network (genetically optimized tuning algorithms) would provide a dynamic 3 dimentional communications media for independent objects.
Also electromagnetic radiation broader than just the visible spectrum would provide for discreet coding and inventory as well as serve covert needs.
Bokode is a very cool concept.
This loks like it is positioned as an AR alternative rather than mobile tagging replacement.
I’m not clear what the purpose of the bokode is when recognized by a camera since this device (currently) can’t connect you to anything, like a mobile phone can.
Like RFID chips aren’t bokodes fragile and susceptible to breakage?
I’m also not entirely clear about the tiling of datamatrix codes. Is the bokode a miniaturized collection of dm codes and if so how do you encode all these codes with content in an easy way?
Think outside the box on this one. In just the first few minutes after hearing the piece on “To The Point” on NPR, I have thought of at least 25 areas where the bokode can be used to benefit society. A few are:
1. Alergy information on product packaging. An application on the smart phone to compare the information to your/your families known list of alergic reactions to ingredients.
2. Personal identification on credit cards. Encrypted information containing a picture and verification questions if in doubt about user identity.
3. The surgeon confirms the identity of the patient, the procedure, and where to operate; left foot, right eye, etc.
4. Bokode printed on advertising pages in magazines with more information about the product and an application on your smart phone to tell you the pricing and where to get the product locally.
5. Manufacturers can use the product access information to compile product interest and demographics of those interested in the product. They could even capture which similar products were accessed by the consuner.
6. Bokode on highway signs tied to maps and databases to warn of hazards on the road ahead of YOU in real time.
7. Your spouse sends you an email with a list of products to buy on the way home. To be sure you buy the right products, the email contains the product information from the bokodes read from the empty product container/ad/coupon. An application on your phone compares the information from the products in front of you to the list. (When the email says “don’t buy beer”, you can override that.)
This has enourmous possibilities. If you have not been contacted by large businesses yet, you will soon. This is just the kind of thing the advertising industry would love to have available. An inexpensive way to get a lot of product information into the hands of the consumers and the manufacturers. Not to mention the cell phone providers would love to have another very popular “app” for their customers that would drive a higher penetration into the “smart phone” market. (Now you, your spouse, and your kids need smart phones.)
I am a 60+ year old man so it doesn’t take a whiz-kid to see the practical benefits of this development.

Great innovation because of the huge amount of information that could be delivered, i think a big problem of tags currently in use.
The description of passive tags was a little short, maybe you could provide a little more information on this topic. It is not always possible to place a small optical apparatus to show the tag .. the passive tag and illumination by flash would be a big deal.
Great idea! Its generally paves a new way of giving or passing out information of a certain product or object – in the retail, medical, military and many others.
Hm, the main benefit to this appears to be its small size and 3-D spatial data. If you don’t need either of those things, this doesn’t appear to provide any advantage over regular visible codes. And it also requires a lens in front of it to work, and either a backlight or a rear reflector. So a lot of the possible uses people have cited above (magazines, E-mail, other routine object identification) are either impossible, impractical, or offer no advantage over a plain old barcode.
Agree with Martin. The killer app here is the reliable determination of position and angle. As such, this enables far more accurate motion capture.
And if Nintendo aren’t listening, they should be. This enables a far more accurate Wii Remote and Sensor Bar. (The Wii Remote determines its angle and distance to the TV by using an infrared camera to detect a couple of infrared LEDs in the Sensor Bar. With bokodes, they could simply look at a bokode embedded in the Sensor Bar and figure it out from there.)
